Church membership is critical. The Bible describes church membership in vital language and yet it has become very popular in our day to act as if church membership doesn’t matter. It seems we should be casual and understanding about the cultural fear of commitment and thus act as if church membership is antiquated and unnecessary for a church to honor God and help people. Not true. Jonathan Leeman, in his excellent book, Church Membership: How the World Knows Who Represents Jesus explains, in crystal clear language, the necessity of church membership according to Scripture.
Church membership is a formal relationship between a church and a Christian characterized by the church’s affirmation and oversight of a Christian’s discipleship and the Christian’s submission to living our his or her discipleship in the care of the church. -Jonathan Leeman
