Our definition of worship for 2012 is from musician and worship leader, Bob Kauflin: “Christian worship is the response of God’s covenant people to His self-revelation that exalts God’s glory in Christ in our minds, affections, and wills, in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
We learned last week that part of the response of God’s covenant people in worship is an understanding of just how they came to be called God’s covenant people. God gives us those details in His self-revelation called the Bible. You are wired for worship. You and I are constantly worshipping. The difficulty is that we often fail to worship God and end up kneeling before idols. That is Paul’s dilemma in Romans 9. He is deeply sorrowful over the Israelite rejection of the gospel because they have the best wiring ever! They have the adoption, glory, covenants, law, worship, promises, patriarchs and Jesus himself! They should be brightly burning in worship, but while all the wiring is there, they are still in the darkness of unbelief.
This week we will take a look at the last three parts of Israel’s worship wiring and see why they should have exalted Christ. As we go, I will point out how these great truths apply to us as we seek to respond to the Scriptures in our minds, affections and wills in the power of the Holy Spirit. I pray that your heart is encouraged and challenged by this study.
