No one can face this life with real joy on their own. God gives us the strength that we need even in unstable, uncertain, blue times. We must rely upon him to hold us in these moments. True joy is found in Jesus, not in Christmas.
I want to pray for you the prayer I prayed for our church family this past week in hopes that this year will be a more Christ-centered Christmas than any year before.
God, I pray that the people looking at this screen today will understand the necessity of establishing their hope in God, not in trinkets and toys. I pray that they will understand the necessity of basing their faith in God’s character, not in the things he gives. I pray that you will convict our hearts of the idolatry of founding our joy on things. Forgive us for basing our joy in the reaction of our family when they open presents. Forgive us for basing our joy in a season, or a feeling, or a meal, or a tree, or a tradition, even a good tradition. God, make us joyful because we have you, not because we have stuff. Give us strength to walk confidently this season because we walk with you, toward you and in you. Be glorified in the joy of your people, Amen.
