What does it mean to be conformed to the image of Christ?
It Means Something Glorious for Our Future: We know that our ultimate conformation to the image of Christ will come at our glorification. The word for image means an original that is intended to be copied. We will become like the original ultimately when he comes back to get us.
- Romans 8:23 “And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.”
- 1 Corinthians 15:49 “Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.”
- Philippians 3:20-21 “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.”
- Our conformation to Christ is ultimate in his return and our glorification, but there is a present element to our conformation as well. The beauty of Pauline descriptions of our salvation is the already-not yet dimension that demonstrates how our conformation to Christ begins at our conversion and continues until our glorification which is precisely the intent of Romans 8:29-30. Salvation was begun by God, is being carried out by God and will be completed by God.
