Deal bountifully with your servant, that I may live and keep your word.
 Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.
 I am a sojourner on the earth; hide not your commandments from me!
 My soul is consumed with longing for your rules at all times.
 You rebuke the insolent, accursed ones, who wander from your commandments.
 Take away from me scorn and contempt, for I have kept your testimonies.
 Even though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will meditate on your statutes.
 Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.
(Psalm 119:17-24 ESV)
Time in the World (21-24)
- You rebuke the insolent, accursed ones, who wander from your commandments. This is simply a statement from David acknowledging that God punishes the wicked. Malachi 4:1 for behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.
- Take away from me scorn and contempt, for I have kept your testimonies. David is saying this: “I know that you punish the wicked for their wickedness, but they’re mocking me for my righteousness and I’m the one who’s trying to be faithful to your word! Make them stop!” Job 2:9;
For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
