How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes!
With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.
In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.
I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.
I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
(Psalm 119:9-16 ESV)
How Do We Read The Scriptures?
If the Bible is the map for us to stay on the road of faith as Christians, how then do we read and study it in order to apply it’s principles to our lives? David prays that God would give him insight into the Scriptures and so should we.
David’s Prayer: With my whole heart [intellect, emotions & will] I seek you [notice: David is seeking after God here, not just after Scripture for Scripture’s sake. The goal of Scripture is God!] Let me not wander [reject, push aside, fail to listen to] from your commandments! Notice also that we are strangers and aliens on this earth, not wanderers. We are not to meander to and fro searching for the truth. We have the truth sitting in our hands this week and our goal is to stick with it, and to not wander from it. “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart, Lord, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.” We wander in two ways: in sin, which is obviously against the Bible, but we also wander into false teaching, which is any teaching contrary to the Bible. Pray that God will guard your heart and mind against false teaching and help you to put sin to death in your life.
