The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah (Psalm 24 ESV)
The ESV STUDY BIBLE says this in the introduction of this Psalm: The psalm asserts the astounding idea that the God who created and owns everything is the very same God into whose presence the faithful worshiper enters because of the covenant with Israel. Such is the privilege of being Israel, and such too defines their mission, namely, to bring God’s fame to all his creation, and especially to all mankind.
Psalm 24 is an incredible picture of the ownership of God over the entire universe, which dramatically impacts those who worship him and their mission toward the entire universe.
We join the worshippers of Israel as they look to God in adoration of his might and glory. They begin their time of worship in contemplation of his ownership of everything (1). They first worship God’s ownership in contemplation of the scope of his ownership: The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein. Thus, God owns everything. Everything in the universe belongs to God. Not only does God own everything, he rules and reigns as sovereign over everyone. Whether we bow the knee to Jesus or not, he reigns.
Jehovah is the Universal King, all nations are beneath his sway: true Autocrat of all the nations, emperors and czars are but his slaves. Men are not their own, nor may they call their lips, their hearts, or their substance their own; they are Jehovah’s rightful servants. -CHS
As you look to your life today, and on the news story that Osama Bin Laden has been killed, remember that the earth is the Lord’s. Sometimes we think that God is involved in the big things like tornadoes and terrorists, but we must remember that God is involved in today and tomorrow as well. Your life is beneath the ownership of God. Whether you are his child or his enemy, he reigns over you. Bow the knee in submission to the King of the universe and find joy in your humility.
