Psalm 19 Part II (March 30, 2011)

[7] The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;  [8] the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;  [9] the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.  [10] More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.  [11] Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.  [12] Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.  [13] Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.  [14] Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:7-14 ESV)

Reason #3: Scripture Rejoices (Brings Joy to) the Heart.

1. Because it is Right: When we, in our lives try everything to be happy, whether it is through our jobs, relationships, or our stuff, we find in those attempts no lasting satisfaction because our ultimate joy is meant to be in God.

2. John 15:5 (Notice the reality of living without abiding in Christ = Nothing!)

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. (John 15:8-11 ESV)

Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. (2 Corinthians 1:24 ESV)

My whole responsibility is to work with you for your joy because if our purpose on this earth is to glorify God, or make much of God, you won’t glorify someone you disobey and you won’t obey someone you don’t love and you won’t love someone you don’t know. So my mission is to get you to know God, because to know God is to love God and Jesus said that when you love me you will keep my commandments and when you obey you make the one whom you obey look glorious as the life-changing Father he truly is.

Reason #4: Scripture Enlightens the Eyes.

1. Because it is Pure: “No mixture of error defiles it, no stain of sin pollutes it; it is the unadulterated milk, the undiluted wine.” –Spurgeon. Its purity is its potency resulting in both wonder and understanding.

2. Wonder:

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:   “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?  Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.  “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.  Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?  On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone,  when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” (Job 38:1-7 ESV)

3. Understanding:

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18 ESV)

Hope in the Psalms

We are enlightened by the Scriptures as God, the author of all that is transforms our minds and hearts by his word and wisdom.
